New Prestwick Firm Stresses Shorter Golf

Responding to today's changing golf market and Golf 20/20 industry initiatives, Hilton Head Island, S.C.-based Prestwick 12 Golf Inc. says it has developed a new concept in the golf course design and development business.

Developed by Mark Brown, founder of Links magazine, and Terry LaGree, vice president of Barbaron Golf Course Construction Co., based in Inverness, Fla., the Prestwick 12 Golf concept was conceived to help grow the game of golf. To do so, Prestwick 12 addresses and overcomes four major factors cited for declining numbers the game has experienced recently—time, affordability, the difficulty of learning the game and the difficulty of new golf courses.

Prestwick 12 Golf was inspired by Prestwick Golf Club, one of Scotland's first links courses, which originally had just 12 holes. Starting with the inaugural event held in 1860, Prestwick hosted the first 12 British Open Championships. In all, the Open Championship has been played at Prestwick 24 times, the last in 1925. The history of Prestwick 12's namesake Scottish links will provide a marketing theme for new courses developed by the company, as well as the interior design theme for associated clubhouse facilities.

According to Brown and LaGree, the mission of Prestwick 12 Golf is simply to "make golf more fun for more people." To do so, the company advocates the design and construction of six-hole loops, forming 12- or, if desired, 18-hole, regulation-length golf courses with a variety of par threes, fours and fives. These courses give golfers the option of playing any combination of six-hole loops, each of which can be played in about 1 hour and 15 minutes each.

Prestwick 12 Golf promises to provide cost-effective, turn-key golf facilities, and offer a full range of client services.
